Do you think this is worth $35 - $37 dollars? How much would you pay for it? The guy that runs a vintage store here in town is saving it for "Ryan's Mom" (Me), lol. My son took a picture of it and sent it to me to see if I was interested. When I started collecting Pyrex, I set a limit (in my mind)as to how much I'd spend on any piece of Pyrex and my limit was $30. Now I know, that $5 to $7 dollars is not a lot more, and rules are made to be broken...so what do you think?? Do you think I should get it, or not? The most I think I've ever paid for one piece of Pyrex was $22.
Well honey, if you're asking, it's because you really want it and you want your readers to say, go for it. If this is rare, in good condition, something you really want and will use, then by all means, get it. The other important question is, will you regret NOT buying it? Inflation may be the tipping point as far as your limit. It looks pretty clean and collectable. Can you think of it as an investment? I believe, if something makes you happy and you will use it, get it. Besides, I bet you could sell it down the road.
ReplyDeleteThat seems a little steep, but if it's a pattern you really want, then you might not want to hold out and wait to find it cheaper. The value is probably also based on the holder, which looks like it's in good condition. I found the same divided dish with lid at a thrift store for about $5, but it definitely didn't have the holder.
ReplyDeleteThis Constellation divided dish is my prized possession. This was the gateway drug to my Pyrex addiction. I found the exact same dish with candle cradle at a church rummage sale for $5. My mom later pulled the exact same one out of the kitchen cupboard. It was not as shiny and new, but I'm glad I have this piece my dad gave her as a Christmas gift when they were newly weds. Would I fork out almost $40 for it? Yes indeed I would. There's a lot of Pyrex I'd shell out bigger clams for if I could find it. I was watching American Pickers recently and the stubby guy who collects oil cans was talking about how people start off collections with cheaper, less exciting pieces. Eventually, the serious collectors move onto the bigger, more expensive pieces.
ReplyDeleteDo what's right for you, but remember that this is a pretty rare piece and by the photo, it looks like it's in good condition. What will you regret more - parting with an extra finsky or not having a deluxe piece of Pyrex?
All the best,
Erin
I would vote no, but I am a real cheapie and don't have a sentimental attachment to this particular pattern or piece!
ReplyDeleteIf you LOVE it and there are no thrift stores that sell Pyrex, or sell it at good prices in your area, then okay. BUT, it will not be as big of a thrill as getting it at a wonderful price even if you have to wait months/years, and perhaps even cobble the pieces together. It will be very difficult to find that cradle on its own though, I bet. i could be wrong.

I'm going to have to go with no on this one, if it were me. I try as hard as I can to thrift or trade for all of my Pyrex, and I find that there is so much joy in finding that long-lost piece. It's like a never-ending treasure hunt. I did buy my set of 4 Butterprint Cinderella Bowls on Ebay for $50 including shipping, but they were in mint condition and the centerpiece of my collection. I will say that I love the pieces in my collection I've found for a buck or two WAY more than those I've paid more for (even closer to $8). I don't have a limit, but then again, I'm cheap ... and there's not a lot I want, or have to have, right now. I'm willing to wait it out and find it for a steal, even if it takes years! Then again, there have been other items in my life I didn't buy, went back to get, and they were gone ... and man did I kick myself for passing on them - if this is that piece for you, then you should go for it!
ReplyDeletesl...i would maybe ask the vender a couple of questions. first, how long has the piece been for sale and if the price is negotiable. if its only been there a short while the seller may not budge, but if its been hanging out for a while, maybe they would drop the price. if your max is $30, i would negotiate. no price is set in stone. all that being said, if i really really really needed a piece to complete a set, i would pay more than i normally would. is it really worth $35? prob not. can you live without its lovely pyrexiness? prob not.... :)
ReplyDeleteI'd vote no on this one too. I got this dish with craddle for 15$ and I thought it was pretty expensive at the time. The golden rule with Pyrex is to go with your gut, if you love it, you have moolah and you can't live without then go for it. However I have the feeling you will find it cheaper sometime soon! :)
ReplyDeleteHere's one on ebay, $25.99 and free shipping. Looks to be in pretty good shape too.

I must agree that seems high to me. I would probably not buy it. Only you can decide if it's worth that to you. Let us know what you decide.
ReplyDeleteNo.
ReplyDeleteI do not like this piece. I would not buy an item with a cradle either, unless it was to resell. I do not find those cradles attractive enough to display or collect (as of right now, might change in the future).
If you really like it & you set your limit at $30, I still say GO FOR IT! $7 is not that much more money. Spoil yourself. I'm not sure how frequent you see Pyrex in your area, but if it's not frequent in your area to see Pyrex such as this, do it.
Go with your heart - get it if you really want it! ...and ask for a discount, the worst they can say is 'no' and you still haven't lost anything. Keep us posted :)
ReplyDeleteI got this for a couple bucks at the thrift store. I don't use divided dishes though, they just sit on my shelf. I liked the warmer more than anything. I think there are better patterns out there for that much money.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it depends on if you have seen it before and if it is a collection you are fond of?
ReplyDeleteI find that if I am unsure usually it means 'no'. If you really love it and think that you will regret not buying it then get it. Could you think about it for a couple of days and if it is gone then thats life? If you REALLY want it you probably won't be able to wait a couple of days and will run back and get it anyway. At that price it shouldn't sell in a hurry.
ReplyDeleteI say, buy it. I don't know when you started collecting, but when you established your $30 limit, you might now be able to justify the increase of your purchases on inflation since that initial spending limit. It's the difference in the cost of a value meal somewhere (if you partake in such things)...besides, when you have a strong passion and desire for something, the value of the pleasure it will bring you is certainly worth the money spent on it.
