Flameware fun

How fun! My first flameware, and another cool Pyrex artifact dating back to 1949.

More details of how this pair came together, and inflation-adjusted pricing are on my blog. Happy thrifting everyone!

Pyrex drought is over!

I haven't had any luck finding any dishes during my thrifting adventures but last week on a quick trip to Goodwill for a frame, I found these lovelies!

She's a little scratched but that gives it her charms. This is my favorite pattern ever!

One of two with lids. This is my first divide dish. Oh what to use it for!

And then I found this one! I love the blue color inside and the simple pattern outside. It even came with a lid. This one was 8 bucks. The joys of Goodwill.

Shooting Fish in a Barrel

This weekend, my hubby and I took a road trip to Philadelphia for a friend's wedding. On the way home, we decided to stop in Adamstown, PA for a quick visit to a few of my mom's favorite antique malls.

We only had a couple hours, but in our short time there, we did some major damage.

Here is a sampling of what was around practically EVERY corner:

And this:

I seriously was shrieking with joy!

I usually have to work so hard to find Pyrex back home!!!!

I will post again later this week to show you what I bought. In the meantime, come visit me at my blog: The 1972 Retro WW Experiment. I'd love to see you sometime...

Where Do These Cradles Belong?

Friday yard sales in my town just don't happen very often, but there were a few yesterday - maybe they were getting ahead of the rainy day today.  Anyway, I found these cradles -  I think they look nice with these pieces but I'm wondering what they really go with - they both say Corning Ware on the bottom, the smaller one has P-11-M-1 - the larger one has P-10-M-1.  I wonder if I had been there early would there had been casseroles sitting on them?  I paid 50 cents for the two.

I also bought this carafe at the same sale - prices were great there - 50 cents for this!

Have a great evening, everyone..

Road Trips and Pyrex

Hi Pyrex-loving friends!
Last weekend the boyfriend and I decided to hop in our car and go exploring in our grand state of Washington.  We ended up in a gorgeously sparse corner of the state, and setting up camp in a rambling gorge carved out during an ancient flood of epic proportions.
We of course had to stop at every thrift, antique, and junk shop we happened to spy on Google Maps along the way.
Thus making what was supposed to be a four hour journey an alarming eight hour journey.

But it was totally worth it, for at one of the scarier junk shops (and I don't use that phrase lightly...I thought it was going to collapse around us), in a corner, on the floor, covered in dust and hidden by one of it's blue-hued cousins, was this little bowl.
Now, it was a bit more than I would normally pay for a little piece of Pyrex ($8).  But when I saw it and sifted through the Rolodex in my brain, I had a glimmer of realization that this little bowl wasn't just any bowl.
But I just couldn't quite remember what it was...

...until today when I finally sat down at my little computer and did a bit of research.
I do believe I have me the top half of the Pineapple Party Chip and Dip set!

Happy dance, happy dance!

If you'd like to see more photographs (including some amazing Polaroids!) from our little road trip, please take a peek at my blog!

My inheritance.

This Pyrex Terra 2.5 quart casserole and Corningware 1 quart casserole belonged to my grandmother. They've been at my grandparents' summer home for as long as I can remember (they owned it since the mid 60s and moved there permanently in the early 70s, wintering in Arizona the other half of the year.)

These pieces are an 'inheritance' of sorts from my Grandmother. I decided to photograph them while I was out in the garden, on a rare NOT-rainy day!

The interest in gardening is definitely inherited from my Grandfather. Ask a kid I spent my summers with my grandparents, and Grampa always had a fantastic garden. My favorite things to grow are the things I grew up eating straight from his garden.

After an 8 year break, I have come back to veggie gardening! I am realizing how much I missed it. My little garden is finally starting to look like a real garden and not a box of dirt. It has been a cold, wet spring here (coldest in 50 years, I'm told) so we are off to a very slow start. You can read more about my inherited kitchenware and gardening on my blog.

Never judge a book by it's cover...

Went thrifting on Thursday...we always drive by this "upscale" thrift store every time. This time we decided to give it a whirl...walked in...the littlest things were unreal priced...thought to myself...ok let's go...my daughter wondered to the back...and poof...found these wonderful Pyrex "Spice O' Life" 4 canisters in mint condition for $1.99 each. I guess there is always a chance to find a "cheap" diamond in the ruff!

When Life Gives You a (Not So Sweet) Watermelon

Make watermelon agua fresca and serve it in a pretty Pyrex carafe!

Original Fridgies - Yellow, Blue and Red

I don't know what kind of sign it is when you don't even know that you have a complete set - probably not good!!!  I realized that I have just about all the pieces of the original set - except for lids for the blue and  red - I used other lids I had for the picture.  Fridgies are the best - besides being so pretty, they're usable, stackable, I don't want to use plastic containers anymore in the fridge! Come on over to my blog and you'll see my Fridgie stack that's growing and some other goodies I've picked up in the past week.

Pyrex in Action - Blue Scroll and Crazy Daisy Mixing Bowls!

Hey Everyone, SixBalloons here!

I love using my vintage Pyrex pieces in the kitchen. The other night I was prepping some roasted cauliflower, from a recipe courtesy of Everybody Likes Sandwiches.

My Pyrex Blue Scroll bowl is a workhorse in the kitchen since it's the perfect size. I mixed up the lemon juice and olive oil goodness and added the spices in the bowl for mixing. Of course when it came time for me to grab my bowl of veggies, out came my favourite Pyrex piece of all time, the 401 Spring Blossom mixing bowl gifted to me by Mr. SixBalloons.

I hope you're all putting your Pyrex pieces to work too! Stop by sometime and check out my recent thrift finds at sixballoons.blogspot.com - I picked up a perfect vintage Royal Quiet De Luxe Typewriter from the 1940s the other day...!

Town & Country Lass and her Distant Cousin

I made a quick thrift stop on the way home yesterday and was pleased to find the Town & Country 503 Fridgie.  I don't need another 503, but....A) It's a pattern I don't have, B) I have a billion 503 lids looking for a fridgie, and C) She was only $2.99.  How's that for justification?

While there I saw the CorningWare baker (complete with mid-century cradle) that I've considered getting in the past.  While not as cool as pyrex, it did strike me as being quite functional, as I do a lot of baking (and a little entertaining), so I grabbed that one too.  Why not!

My New Butterprint..

Two pieces from the same Goodwill, one I had never visited before. They had a couple of other Pyrex pieces, not Butterprint pattern, but both in horrible condition (so sad to see!).

I immediately spotted the #401, priced right at $2.02. It was quite grimy, but cleaned up very well. Upon further digging, the #442 turned up for $3.03. In good, it has some utensil marks inside & out, you may be able to see them in the photo.

All in all, a good day!

Yours truly,
Sir Thrift-A-Lot

back from a hiatus with hearts

I've been on a self-imposed Pyrex hiatus for a while. My kitchen cabinets were overflowing, and I really had to get a handle on my spending. I sold off 12 of my bowls to a collector and gave a casserole (just an early american -- no biggie) away as a housewarming present. But last week, I couldn't help myself. Because I was here:

And that's just one booth in this football-field-size antique mall. Literally, everywhere you turn is Pyrex. (I'm usually loathe to name my thrifting spots, but there is more than enough to go around here.) The first time I went to OVAM, I was jumping around at all the pyrex on the first aisle. After three hours, my spirit was broken. "More Pyrex?" If y'all go out to Fairfield, Ohio, just be sure to pack some granola bars and water, for real.

The prices are often more for collectors than thrifters, but you do occasionally find some good deals. I got a little plate with a pink edge for $1, and a little round Butterprint casserole for $4. But my best score was this:

Golden Hearts promo casserole with warmer -- including what I think are the original candles! -- for $10. Beautiful! I'm glad to be back in the game. :)

Spring Green!

I've taken a little pyrex thrifting break - merely because my kitchen is at capacity and I've realized that I have absolutely no willpower when I find something...even if it's a piece I already have or don't need.  However, I broke the fast yesterday and managed to come up all green!  There was also a spring blossom round casserole, but that, and the smaller cinderella, have already found their way to my friend's house (see honey, I didn't keep ALL four pieces).

Green pyrex makes me happy - especially when I (finally) see the colors mirrored in my newly sprouting spring garden (can you tell Portland is finally having a sunny day - it does wonders for lifting the winter doldrums).

Happy weekend, I'm headed back to the garden!

My Two New Pieces

Finally, after what seems like years (ok, so maybe only a few months!), I came across two new thrifted Pyrex pieces for my slow growing collection.

The smaller one is the #474b, which is listed on Pyrex Files as an unknown pattern, and the circle  dish I can't seem to find any information for.  On the bottom it has the circle with 10 PYREX (TM) OVENWARE.

Hope you're all having a great Pyrex hunting day!

Yard Sale Pyrex

I got all this yesterday at a yard sale for $2.50 - this has to be my best Pyrex bargain, EVER!  The fridgie was priced at 10 cents - I love a deal!!!

Estate Sale Find

I have tried not to attend so many estate sales and yarsd sales. However yesterday there was one in a great upscale neighbor which I thought OK one item is all I can buy.

The items were wonderful and I passed on all the hundred dollar items and went to the garage and there set thes two beauties. Oh another thing I said I was going to quit buying so much pyrex. However this long baking dish looked like it had never been used and so does the casserole dish.
Had to buy them $8.00 each

Friday's Thrifts...

Found this Garden Medley Dish at Goodwill w/lid in great shape for only $5...found it first thing and carried it around till my arms ached...lol.

BIG trade

i recently shipped out a HUGE box of woodland dishes to Studio Reb

and in return she sent me all kinds of new colonial mist to add to my shelves.

and as luck would have it... while i was waiting for the shipment to arrive, i found a twin bowl for $2 at a thrift store.
i've never seen a clear bowl with a pattern on it. does anyone know if there are other patterns that come like this?

so for anyone who is going through a dry spell in the hunting department, trades are always a great way to add to your stash.

Pyrex in my Carry On Luggage!

I flew Air Canada the other day and I carried this Snowflake Bowl in my carry on luggage - what can you do when you have other precious pieces in your suitcase and that is nearly at the weight limit.  If only Air Canada even offered you a snack of nuts anymore, I could have eaten them in my 402 bowl!!!  I just blogged about my other vacation pieces - come on over and read all about them.  http://jillslittlebit.blogspot.com/

Aren't Friends Great?

I just got home from a busy garage sale day and am busy cleaning and sorting, but I wanted to take the time to say a big THANK YOU to my shopping-and-booth partner, Bargain Hunter.

She saw this #404 Colonial Mist bowl first and handed it off to me because she knows how much I like it. How sweet is that? Now I have both the 401 and the 404 and I'm half-way to a full bowl set!
Thanks again , girlfriend -- you're the best!

Orla Kiely for Pyrex

That title caught your eye didn't it!?!

Sadly, it's only in my imagination. I can't help but wonder though whatever happened to the fab retro patterns and shapes of the Pyrex of the past? Let's be honest the new stuff is so BORING!!! What executive meeting resulted in the decision "Let's just make plain glass". Boring bowls, baking dishes and casseroles, all look the same.

Lots of companies looking for a sales boost have turned to a new generation of designers to give their products a new lease of life, so why can't Pyrex do the same?

Imagine elements from these fab patterns applied to your new bakeware and mixing bowls...

I think if Pyrex commissioned the likes of Cath Kidston, Orla Kiely, Amy Butler and Liberty of London to give their products a new lease of life, their sales would go through the roof.

Just a thought, sigh...
