Thursday Treasure

Hello fellow pyrex-maniacs!  Imagine my excitement when I caught a glimpse of the red and orange peeking through the shelves of my local op-shop.  My brain clicked and I recognised it straight away...

My very first 'friendship' piece!  I was so excited to come across this little friendly dish and am still smiling about it!  Love it when that happens.

When in Washington...

 ...any Pyrex lover worth their salt must spend a day (or two...or three) in the tiny town of Snohomish, just a stone's throw from Seattle. 

The entire downtown is almost solely comprised of antique stores.  Some of them giant and cavernous, where if you go in during the morning hours, you may not come back out until the early evening.  Some of them teensy and quaint, where the shop owner knows exactly what's on which shelf (in case you're looking for anything in particular).

But most of them have at least one booth of Pyrex galore.

As with almost all antique stores, the numbers jumping off the price tags are a bit larger than I would ever pay for a piece of brightly colored vintage milk glass, but every so often you stumble upon a lonely corner booth with a piece here, a piece there, and not knowing quite what they have to offer, the price is a bit more manageable.

No, I didn't purchase the $130 set of New Dots bowls, nor did I snap up the $85 set of Yellow Gooseberry Cinderella bowls (I am on an independent crafter's budget here!), but I did find a $4 mint condition, minty green mug and a gently used $5 Friendship plate (um, who knew?!) to take back home with me at day's end.

I also may have had my hands tied behind my back for most of the day...

Aren't Friends Great?

I just got home from a busy garage sale day and am busy cleaning and sorting, but I wanted to take the time to say a big THANK YOU to my shopping-and-booth partner, Bargain Hunter.

She saw this #404 Colonial Mist bowl first and handed it off to me because she knows how much I like it. How sweet is that? Now I have both the 401 and the 404 and I'm half-way to a full bowl set!
Thanks again , girlfriend -- you're the best!

Branching Out

I made a vow to stick with Butterprint only, but it didn't take long to break that one when I saw this Friendship divided casserole! It's just too hard to say no to such a cheery color combo like this one.

New Friends

I had been in a pyrex drought lately.  I wouldn't say that I couldn't find any pyrex on my thrifting excursions, but most of what I did find was in the category of pyrex mediocrity.  I could find pieces I don't collect, mixed in with a few flamingo pink pieces that looked good from far, but were far from good.  Who are these people that abuse their pretty pyrex into a scratched & faded state?  And, who are these thrift store dealers who slap a high price tag on these pieces of trash?  Is it me, or has everyone noticed prices on pyrex are not so "thrifty" anymore?

This week I had a little pyrex thunderstorm roll through to restore the dry patch:

Friendship Bowls!

Pretty awesome!  This was my first time finding Friendship pyrex in it's natural habitat, outside of antique shops.  The small bowl is a 401 1.5 pint and the large bowl is a 403 2.5 quart. Both are in great condition, the small bowl has a few minor decoration scuffs & there are a couple tiny scratches on one of the birds on the large bowl.  I don't think they were used too often.

A tiny scratch, but otherwise perfect.

We need a good home!

Since I don't collect this pattern I am willing to give these 2 friends a new home. I know many of my friends at the Pyrex Collective would cherish these, so I am giving you first dibs before listing them in my shop. If you are interested in one or the pair email me with your offer.  I will take offers until Monday - so entertain me with reasons why your home would be the perfect place for these cuties.

While we're talking about Orange...

I picked up this gem earlier in the week! It's the first piece of Friendship that I've seen in person.

There's more to the story though...


...my 11yo daughter has caught my Pyrexia and asks me all the time, "did you find any Friendship???" So when I spotted this bowl (#443) I had to buy it, even though at $10 it was pushing the budget limit. Her favourite colour is orange. She was so excited! I told her that when she grows up and has a house of her own she can take every Friendship piece with her. Even though she swears she's going to live with me forever.

The whole set was there actually, but the other pattern and the 2 solids were in rough shape and not worth the $36 total. I only regret leaving them behind a tiny bit!

Newest Addition...

Found this beauty the other day. It's my first Friendship pattern dish and I love it. It's in excellent condition as well. Happy happy happy with it! Even used it as part of my Project 365!

Another Friendship!

Look what Hubs got me last night! Friendship divided dish w/ lid. The lip on the lid has a lil chip on it - other than that, it is in great shape. He told me 'crap, I should have waited til Valentines Day'. I say 'Too late! Once you hand it over, it don't count!' lol ;)



He also picked up this for me to list on my etsy shop (AmysVintageStuff). The issue here - the lids are DBD, the pattern looks nice doesn't it? But this is the underside of the lid - if you look at the top side, the pattern is all washed out (still there, but white). The casseroles look to be in great shape.

Hubs bought this for me today, $2. My 1st friendship pattern (altho I do have the large red friendship, cinderella) - this is my 1st pattern piece. I like it so much, I am wondering what to get rid of.

Pyrex and playdates: a confession...

Hey, y'all! I am Heather from over at June {Vintage} and I am super excited to be apart of The Pyrex Collective! And since I want to get to know everyone, I will start off my first post with a confession:

I plan playdates around the accessibility of thrift stores.

Let me elaborate: we live on the edge of a military base in a little vacation town...there are no thrift stores relatively near-by and they all require atleast a 45 minute drive. So, when my little man and I head into town to visit parks and preschool pals, mama is always looking to make sure she gets to look for her a little Pyrex. And because the average age in my county is 24 {seriously, 30-something is ancient around here!}, thrifted Pyrex is a rarity in these parts. But after planning a playdate in a new area in order to stop by a never-thrifted store, I found a mini-collection of precious Pyrex bowls:

From top to bottom: Woodland, Friendship, Spring Blossom, and Autumn Harvest

They are all the tiny size bowls {mostly 1.5 pts...}

I am most excited about the tiny Friendship Cinderella mixing bowl...While its paint has some flaws, the colors are perfect, the milk glass is pristine and white, and it is my first piece in this pattern...

And to be honest...I don't even remember how the playdate went...

401 Mixing Bowls

I have to say that the #401 Pyrex Mixing Bowl is my favourite piece in the series. I feel like a bit of a nerd to say that I have two Spring Blossom 401 bowls; one to use and one to keep in pristine condition. This came about when my dear hubby saw the frozen, concerned look on my face when he was mixing something in my precious bowl with a fork...


I was at Value Village yesterday, and the clerk was unloading new goods in the kitchen area. Yeeps! First I saw an Opal White #441 cinderella tabbed mixing bowl and then... a stack of four #401's: two in the light pink colour, one Butterfly Gold, and one Friendship. What are the odds?


After much consideration, I only picked up the Friendship bowl. I know light pink is coveted, but the paint was quite faded, and get this: I think the previous owners used it as a bowl for paint. The interior was rough and there was dried paint left on the rim of the bowl! Oh that poor Pyrex.

Reading all the wonderful posts, I realised that I was ASSuming that everyone knew me (not too bright). So Here goes!
 I'm Valerie. I live in western Québec. I'm crazy about thrifting and having collecting Pyrex for 3 years now. My SO insists I have every Pyrex ever produced, but of course I disagree!

I was thinking about Pyrex (of course) ,Red Pyrex. There was not a lot produced. Originally you had the 402 Primary bowl and the smallest red fridgie from the original Primary refrigerator set.
For Xmas some Promo pieces were issued like the big red bowl with the gold holly and a big 2 1/2 casserole (that I know of). I think that red was not that popular in the 50's and 60's.

Then in the 70's, they started to produce the Frienship pattern and that pattern has some red pieces. But mostly it's red accents on the bowls and lids.

 

So shown here are the red 402 with my new olive wood spoon (LOVE) and fennel salad, the 472 Frienship casserole and the 501 small fridgie. As you can see I'm missing the lid for the Friendship casserole....If you have one you drop me a line, ok?

I'm a fairly new collector of Pyrex myself, but I have long admired it and have enjoyed seeing many of your fabulous Pyrex finds. Over the past several months, a piece here and a piece there have found their way home with me on my thrifting adventures, and a collection was born.

I'm so excited about The Pyrex Collective, and honored to be a contributor! I'm looking forward to sharing, seeing, and learning more about Pyrex here in the future. I'm Jeni! I blog over at In Color Order. I am about to start my senior year in college studying marketing and studio art. I've been collecting Pyrex for about 1.5 years :) Along with Pyrex I also collect Cathrineholm enamelware, Dansk Kobenstyle and vintage floral sheets. I love to sew and hang out with my pet bunny, George. He likes Pyrex too!

My very favorite Pyrex patterns are Friendship and the delicious solid colored turquoise pieces. I also can't resist the pink, but who can? I love to use my Pyrex with the exception of a few found new in the box and those extra special pieces!
