How Did This Happen?

This is what happens when you never pass up a mini fridgie while thrifting.  There could be worse things, I suppose.  Until I started pulling stuff out of the cupboards I had no idea!  Oops.

More sets madness blogged at Harriet and Quince.

Vacation finds

Hello fellow Pyrexers! I haven't had anything to post lately because I was on a somewhat self-imposed Pyrex hiatus. That all changed this past week when I was on vacation in Tennessee, and North Georgia. I found some great Pyrex at pretty good prices, and left a lot of over-priced Pyrex behind, lol! So, without further ado, here's the loot...

Hope that wasn't too much of a picture overload! Aside from the Pyrex, we had a great time even though it was just as hot up there as it was here in Florida. I'll have some more pictures to post tomorrow of today's flea market finds! So, stay tuned! :)

A green, green weekend (with a wee bit of blue)

It was a productive weekend of vintage green finds.  I was on yet another work road trip and managed to fit in a little thrifting on the way home.  I do love my pyrex, but I have to say that I was over the moon to find two matching pieces (in totally different places) of cathrineholm enamelware.

I blogged a bit about it here if you're interested.

And finally...a bit of blue.  Last find of the weekend!

Pyrex in Action - Blue Scroll and Crazy Daisy Mixing Bowls!

Hey Everyone, SixBalloons here!

I love using my vintage Pyrex pieces in the kitchen. The other night I was prepping some roasted cauliflower, from a recipe courtesy of Everybody Likes Sandwiches.

My Pyrex Blue Scroll bowl is a workhorse in the kitchen since it's the perfect size. I mixed up the lemon juice and olive oil goodness and added the spices in the bowl for mixing. Of course when it came time for me to grab my bowl of veggies, out came my favourite Pyrex piece of all time, the 401 Spring Blossom mixing bowl gifted to me by Mr. SixBalloons.

I hope you're all putting your Pyrex pieces to work too! Stop by sometime and check out my recent thrift finds at sixballoons.blogspot.com - I picked up a perfect vintage Royal Quiet De Luxe Typewriter from the 1940s the other day...!

Spring Green!

I've taken a little pyrex thrifting break - merely because my kitchen is at capacity and I've realized that I have absolutely no willpower when I find something...even if it's a piece I already have or don't need.  However, I broke the fast yesterday and managed to come up all green!  There was also a spring blossom round casserole, but that, and the smaller cinderella, have already found their way to my friend's house (see honey, I didn't keep ALL four pieces).

Green pyrex makes me happy - especially when I (finally) see the colors mirrored in my newly sprouting spring garden (can you tell Portland is finally having a sunny day - it does wonders for lifting the winter doldrums).

Happy weekend, I'm headed back to the garden!

Green

While wondering around the city today, I found myself in the middle of the 420 "Toronto Hash Mob" pot protest/celebration while getting off the subway at Dundas Square here in Toronto. The scent of marijuana filled the air, people were everywhere. Not somewhere you'd normally find me, I made my way to Goodwill where I found a #403 Spring Blossom Green Mixing bowl (my first Spring Blossom Green) & to complete my primary set, I have added the primary green #403 to my collection. Some might consider my Pyrex a big festive considering the celebration.

Yours truly,

Sir Thrift-A-Lot

PS: I don't know about you, but there had been a Pyrex drought over here! I'm glad the drought is over.

Practically Perfect In Every Way

People often ask me why I have so much Pyrex.

Or if I actually use all of it.

I would just like to point out nine individual pieces of perfectly pretty Pyrex in use just in these three photographs.
Take that, naysayers!

If you're interested in exactly what I was doing with all those lemons in Pyrex, you can read about it on my blog, The Victory Garden: Yarn and Curiosities!

recently i saw this beauty...
i put my piece in the mail and to my surprise it was much larger than i expected!
my most recent trade was a sandalwood casserole for this cute sugar and creamer set

Fridgies!

Since I starting collecting Pyrex about a year ago, I noticed that fridgies seem to be hard to find here in the Twin Cities. Fridgies in good condition are even rarer. This past few weeks, luck has been on my side.

My first set (minus the largest fridgie) I found together. They were pushed to the back of the shelf near the bottom. I had been talking to another shopper (the two fiesta sets in my cart caught her eye) and wasn't really paying attention to what was on the shelf until another shopper moved a couple of ... well, something. I don't remember. I just remember seeing the pyrex. And diving for it.

Okay, so I didn't dive for it. That's what I did in my mind. Luckily, I was able to stop myself before I did that. Whew!

When I had a chance, I pushed a few more items aside and pulled out a three piece set of Spring Blossom. It looks like it is unused. Beautiful!

My first pieces of pyrex were a set of Spring Blossom cinderella bowls. (I had bought them because my mom had a set of them when I was growing up. And would never let me use them.)
I have slowly been collecting other Spring Blossom pieces as I find them in thrift stores.

The two smaller ones cost $2 each and the larger one cost $3. Not bad.

About a week later, at different store, I found this one in the Woodland pattern. Again, it was pushed to the back of the shelf with other items hiding it. After a quick inspection, it was paid for and on it's way home with me. It was in excellent condition, just like the ones above.

Not a huge fan of this pattern (like many of you), but it's growing on me. As I mentioned before, fridgies seem to be hard to find here in the TC, so I was feeling lucky to find one even if it wasn't in a pattern I collect.

This one cost me $4.

Since they seem to be hard to find, you can imagine my surprise when I found this blue fridgie with an older lid last night! I hesitated for a minute before I decided to purchase it. Glad I decided to buy it as I'm sure it would have been gone by the time I went back.

Yes, it was a little more than I am usually willing to pay at a thrift store, but it was in great shape with only one small chip in the paint. And I haven't seen a blue fridgie that was in such good condition before.

This one set me back $8.00.

Here are all my fridgies together. My beautiful, growing collection of fridgies.

As this is my first post, I would just like to say that I love seeing all your photos and reading your stories. Keep 'em coming!

Happy pyrex hunting this weekend, everybody!

401's

I took Monday off from work and my boyfriend and I went on a little road trip up to Maine. He knows of my love of Pyrex (he even got me this book for my birthday!) and so he knew we were stopping at some antique stores along the way :) Let me tell you, I hit the Pyrex motherlode! I haven't had time to photograph everything, but I did get to take a quick pic of these cute little 401's. Spring Blossom is my favorite, the blue primary is my 2nd piece of the set (I already have the yellow primary) and New Dots....well, need I say more? I really had to limit what I got, but luckily my boyfriend treated me to some pieces too :) I'll share more over the weekend - happy hunting!

Pyrex and playdates: a confession...

Hey, y'all! I am Heather from over at June {Vintage} and I am super excited to be apart of The Pyrex Collective! And since I want to get to know everyone, I will start off my first post with a confession:

I plan playdates around the accessibility of thrift stores.

Let me elaborate: we live on the edge of a military base in a little vacation town...there are no thrift stores relatively near-by and they all require atleast a 45 minute drive. So, when my little man and I head into town to visit parks and preschool pals, mama is always looking to make sure she gets to look for her a little Pyrex. And because the average age in my county is 24 {seriously, 30-something is ancient around here!}, thrifted Pyrex is a rarity in these parts. But after planning a playdate in a new area in order to stop by a never-thrifted store, I found a mini-collection of precious Pyrex bowls:

From top to bottom: Woodland, Friendship, Spring Blossom, and Autumn Harvest

They are all the tiny size bowls {mostly 1.5 pts...}

I am most excited about the tiny Friendship Cinderella mixing bowl...While its paint has some flaws, the colors are perfect, the milk glass is pristine and white, and it is my first piece in this pattern...

And to be honest...I don't even remember how the playdate went...

Do you have a collector's confession to make? I can't wait to get to know all of you {your blogs, your collections!} better!

California Pyrex Dreamin'

Hi there!  This is Anna, resident Yarn Wrangler and thrifter extraordinaire, popping over from Victory Garden Yarn to introduce myself and say hello!

I happen to be on a small sojourn from the cool, calm, and collected Pacific Northwest to the (very) hot and not-too-bothered Central Valley of California.  Upon disembarking my wee plane (into the ninety degree heat, I might continue to add), a large vehicle (with plenty of room for transporting things...such as Pyrex) was waiting for me, complete with familial chauffeur ready to hunt and gather vintage milk glass of a particular persuasion.

What we found was...well, you just have to see it:

Old Town Antiques

And it continued throughout the day. As the heat rose, these two wilty hunters couldn't tell if they were feeling faint due to the excessive heat or the overwhelming displays of Pyrex they encountered...

Rocky Hill Antiques

All of this bounty was not lost on these weary and searching souls.  Oh no, for our brains were suddenly clear and our hands were able to reach for shiny objects.

Central Valley Pyrex
Cradles and fridgies and baking pans and pixies!

OMG NIB!
Perfectly pristine and packaged Pyrex!

We think we may have found Pyrex Heaven...but it's hard to say...as Miss Scarlet would say, tomorrow IS another day...

P is for Pretty Pink Pyrex

Hello, my name is Betty and I am addicted to Pyrex.

Well... not ALL Pyrex. I'm a little bit picky about what I like.
According to Jen at The Thriftshop Romantic I suffer from enjoy having Pyrexia an addiction that affects one in ten.

Whenever I go to a Goodwill, Estate Sale, or other Thrifting location, I make a beeline for wherever Pyrex will be.My mother got some Pyrex and Corningware dishes as wedding gifts but neither of us was really excited about Pyrex until fairly recently. About 2 years ago we were at one of our first estate sales ever and in the kitchen (my favorite room, of course!) there was a Pink Gooseberry Bake-Serve-Store in the smallest size for one dollar. My mother had never seen pink Pyrex (I had only ever really seen Spring Blossom) so we bought it.

That one piece was the beginning. We soon found out that not only was pink Pyrex lovely, it was seldom seen and exorbitantly priced. Now that Pyrex is on our radar we notice it at Goodwill and other thrifts but we don't see it often at Estate or Garage sales (unless you're DYING for blue cornflower). We regularly see it at Goodwill but it's rarely at the price and condition that we want.We have, however, been lucky enough to amass a fairly nice collection. My favorite pattern is Spring Blossom (fortunately very common), and I rarely have to pass it up. It has sold more pieces than any other pattern in Pyrex history and because of that I find it everywhere and often in good shape.

I believe in using my Pyrex because why else am I buying it? It is the superior option in bake ware and it's pretty. I even discovered after recently finding a lasagna pan that I didn't have to grease the pan before baking Pumpkin Bread in it.

My favorite item is my four quart cinderella bowl. It's Red but I wish I had it in Spring Blossom. Oh well.
