The Many Uses...

Hi Pyrex friends!  It's Anna popping over from Victory Garden Yarn!  I asked you all in my last post here at the Pyrex Collective how you like to use your Pyrex other than for baking and staring at in your pretty displays.  I thought I would share my latest use:

Atomic Christmas Setup
Kitschy Christmas craft fair display!  When peddling handmade, kitsch-inspired Christmas ornaments, one is practically required to pull out their holiday hued Pyrex and show it off, right?!

Snowflake Pyrex in the Booth
Since my little 'Atomic Christmas Ornaments' were inspired by the classic colors of a 1950's Christmas, it is only appropriate that classic Christmas Pyrex be a part of the display.

Rainbow Kerchiefs and Ornaments
If you look very closely you can also see my new favorite use for a small fridgie: business card holder, brilliant!

Those of use who have hefty collections of Pyrex must come up with new and ingenious ways of using our Pyrex...that way we can justify having it all when asked, 'But, don't you have enough yet?'

Pyrex Stories

Getting to read about everyone's Pyrex adventures has been one of the best things about being a member of the Collective. I am starting to realize that we all have interesting and personal stories about certain pieces that we pick up! Whether it be the labour-of-love scrubbing of the Heinz promotional pan that P. from The Way I Sew It wrote about, or Katie's Zodiac Casserole which was from her parents' wedding, we all seem to love the memorable aspect of our collections.

My silly story for today is regarding a large Colonial Mist mixing bowl I found at a thrift store this past summer. I stumbled upon it at a volunteer-run thrift shop that supports the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). This place has quirky volunteers, and quirky customers. It's also a bit of a dive - very cluttered store, messy, dusty, and stuffed to the max. When I first spotted the bowl, it was filled to the brim with dried macaroni pasta that looked like it had been sitting out on display for weeks. There wasn't anywhere to dump the noodles, so I brought it up to the till and asked the price. She said "So, do you want the pasta?" I stifled a smile, politely said no, and she quoted me $4. I wonder what it would have cost me if I indeed wanted the noodles ;)

The reality is, it made me a bit sad that there are customers who might need to take the pasta home. While I know it was the right choice to toss it, I guess I have a bit of guilt for wasting the food. It's experiences like this that make me realize that for many of us, every piece has a story. For me and my Colonial Mist bowl, it reminds me that sometimes people thrift because they need to, and I should appreciate the fact that I get to do it for fun. I like to think that thrifting keeps me humble; if I need to scrub an old pot that someone has tossed, it's worth it to put in a bit of hard work and get something useful and rewarding. I guess that's the beauty of stories. Keep em coming, Pyrex Collective!

Feel free to visit me at SixBalloons to say hi sometime!

your first piece...and a few other things.

in my first post here, i mentioned that i would be writing a pyrex-heavy post on my blog. it's up now:

14 reasons i love pyrex.

and i am a bit concerned about this sounding spammy and "come visit MY blog" and such.

so i will leave you with a joke, a question, and some pretty pyrex.

first the joke:

Q: how many pyrex collectors does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: just go ahead and change the bulb already. they're all out thrifting.
(snort)

a question: do you remember your first piece? what was it? mine was the butterprint butter dish.

and now the pretty pyrex...

thanks gang :)
