I walk into a thrift store that is really good at having Pyrex for me all the time. As I am walking over to the "Pyrex" section there was this lady touching this bowl. I gasped inside in my head and screamed PUT IT DOWN. (imagine if I said it out loud tee-hee) She did. I grabbed it. What would you do if you saw someone walk out of the thrift store or standing in line waiting to buy y our precious Pyrex? I think I would just walk out of the store devastated. I rather find an empty shelf then to see someone walk out with it.
This is the small bowl.
This is the small bowl.
I've had this happen with another item, other than Pyrex. I was devastated. This was an old photo album filled to the brim with old '80s stickers. The guy was on a couch looking at them. I could tell at one point he wasn't sure if he wanted it. I followed him around for 20 minutes to see if he'd put it down... after that I was so upset he didn't I had to leave. The photo albums are the #1 thing I go to first in a thrift looking for just that: old photo albums with stickers.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, happened to me last week with a vintage Fire King egg nog set that was complete. I wanted to cry.
ReplyDeleteI've seen someone walk out of an estate sale with a big box of Jadeite set and my heart broke a little! If only I was 5 minutes early...
ReplyDeleteI'm always screaming 'PUT IT DOWN' silently in my head too. This is really bad, but I've accidentally reached into someone's cart to pull out a promotional 043! When she said "Oh, excuse me! That's mine!" I realized she was a customer and not a staff person stocking the shelves! I was so embarrassed! My bad! ;-)
Several months ago I was in one of my favorite thrift stores and was looking at a Fire King loaf dish. It wasn't that special, but I was thinking about buying it. Then this lady came around the corner, and what did she have in her hand? A Pyrex PINK DAISY divided dish!!! She looked at my little Fire King loaf dish and said she liked it, and didn't see it when she was on that aisle a few minutes before, and she said she really needed a loaf dish (she obviously wasn't a collector). I asked her if she'd like to swap (I was secretly praying that she'd say yes).....and lo and behold she said YES!! I practically ran up to the cashier and paid for it before she changed her mind. But...if she hadn't wanted to swap, I would have probably cried and been depressed the rest of the day! LOL
ReplyDeleteI have been known to casually 'stalk' someone with Pyrex in hands or cart hoping for a put down. Doesn't work. I'm like you I would rather not see it at all then know I just missed it.
ReplyDeleteI love reading about your powers of mind control!
ReplyDeleteYep it happened to me too! Sometimes the mind control works...others not!
People don't under stand the DRAMA and TRAUMA of thrifting. It's an emotional rollercoaster!
ReplyDeleteI confess I am not a very gracious loser. I give them the stinkeye. Sometimes it works, and they put it down. Then I'm sure they go home and tell their family about the creepy lady at the thrift store.
ReplyDeleteThis is the EXACT first piece I bought...last weekend at a Goodwill! I purposefully stopped there with the hopes of finding my very first one and after wandering through the housewares section I had pretty much given up hope until I came around the corner to the last shelf and there it was! Thank goodness I didn't have to do bodily harm to anyone in order to get it, but the force is already strong so I can't speak for what might happen in the future! :)
