When do you walk away?

I posted this on my other blog but I wanted to ask you guys as well.

So here's a question; When you see something and it makes your heart race a little and when you pick it up to inspect your heart drops because the piece is so badly damaged/broken/worn that you can't salvage it, At what point do you have to walk away and how hard is it for you to do?

I saw the above Pyrex bowls at my Value Village and they were so worn and marked up. I assume someone put them in the dishwasher. It was so sad to see them like that. I see a lot of Pyrex like this.

For me it's hard to say no to a good find, I love a challenge and finding ways to rehab a piece but sometimes they're just unsalvageable. Sometimes I need my husband there to be the voice of reason.

  1. I understand! I left a small butterprint bowl the other day. It was faded and scratched. I also walk away when it's too expensive.

  2. If they were just worn, but still usable and cheap - I would buy it.
BUT if they are worn and the inside glaze is gone I would not buy it or if it looks like it was used to store items in the garage (oil, etc).

  3. i usually walk around the thrift store holding it for a while. when i'm ready to check out i'll know if my heart just isn't feeling it or not. its all about intuition i think. but of course if its really damaged, its kind of always a no-go for me.

  4. I've become more selective, and I try to buy what's in very good condition (or if I'm pretty sure I can clean the gunk off...and I've been wrong about that a couple times). The couple pieces I have that are worn, I just use them and don't worry about damaging them any further.

  5. This happens to me all the time. I'm all like, "Come to mama. I've been waiting for you." Then I realize the Pyrex has just barely survived ten years of being used as a sandbox toy. I actually get angry that the stores have the nerve to still sell them for the prices that they do. I know they're still usable, but we love the beauty of Pyrex and when the beauty isn't there anymore, the thrill is gone. Let's have a group hug.

  6. I typically pass on them if they're in really bad shape. It breaks my heart too. Like Erin, I'm shocked at the prices thrift shops will put on them in super bad condition. The only exception I have is if the piece is in bad shape but has a lid, I'll buy it. Lids are like the holy grail sometimes!

  7. I usually pass when an piece is in really bad condition, however I do have a breaking point! A few weeks ago I came across a turquoise promotional piece that was REALLY high on my wish list in awful condition. It was really hard for me to leave it, but I did. A few days later I went back and it was still there, so I broke and bought it! Even though it's beat up, I'm happy to have it in my collection since I don't know when I'll ever come across the piece again! In the two years I've been collecting that was the first time I saw it! :)

  9. if they are cheap enough and you garden or sit out outside decorations, buy them to use as flowerpots or outside holiday decor! if you had a front porch to decorate, they would look good full of pinecones or something else for the holidays!
